Obituary for Bernard Paul K. Haena Sr.
Born November 16, 1943 in Hilo, HI and died February 3, 2024 at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, CA surrounded by his family.
Bernard was the second to last child of William and Mary Haena. The #7 of 8 children he spent his formative years in Hilo and graduated from Hilo High School. He then went on to join the Navy in 1963. His tour with the Navy landed him in San Diego CA.
After his active service he moved to San Francisco, CA where he found his wife of 55 years Sonia. They made the San Francisco bay area their home and had two children – Bernard Jr. and Brian. Bernard Sr. spent 33 years working for American Airlines at SFO. He lived in San Bruno until his retirement and then split time between California and Hawaii.
Bernard is survived by his wife Sonia, sons Bernard Jr and Brian, daughter in law Karen, grandchildren Brian Jr., Brayden, Bryce, Brynn and Brooke, his siblings Calvin Haena and Josephine Galang and a number of nephews and nieces.
A mass and celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, February 20th at Church of the Good Shepherd in Pittsburg, CA at 10:00AM and burial will take place on Wednesday March 27th at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua-Kona, HI.
