Obituary for Daisy Louise Hamlett

On the morning of September 5, 2022, Daisy Louise Hamlett of San Bruno, California died at the age of 92 years old. Daisy was born in Montego Bay Jamaica to Uriah and Mina Blackwood in 1929. Her parents migrated with her and her sister to London, England where she became the first Black “ticket collector” working on the Double-Dutch bus system of the time. While there she studied beauty, did some modeling and then found her lifelong career as a telephone operator.

She moved to New York City in the 1960s where she got married and where she had her two children. She carried on a long career as an operator and retired as a manager from the Bell Atlantic/Verizon telephone company.

Daisy enjoyed collectibles such as fine china and collectable silver, she also loved puzzles of all kinds and crafts such as knitting, crocheting, and sewing.

Daisy is survived by her daughter Tracy and her husband Randy, her son Wade and his wife Cathy, her grandchildren Steven, Ashli, Christina, Malik and Catherine, and her great-grandchildren Avi, Casen, Aryss, Sage, Demetrius, and Kailynn as well as extended family and friends in Jamaica and England.

Daisy’s ashes are to be scattered at sea later in the year.
