Obituary for Elizabeth Margaret "Betty" Leddy (LaTomme)

Elizabeth “Betty” Leddy passed peacefully on February 10, 2024 at the age of 96. Born on May 27, 1927 at Oxford Furnace, New Jersey, she spent much of her childhood growing up on a chicken farm, and graduated from St Luke’s High School in Ho-Ho-Kus. After graduating from high school, she went to work at United Fruit in New York City: she liked to say she worked on the docks, but in fact the office where she worked was on the dock! In 1946, she met the love of her life, Joseph Vincent, who was working as a draftsman. Joseph Vincent moved out to San Francisco in 1948 and asked Betty to come out and marry him – which she did. They were married at St. Boniface Church in 1950. The couple first bought a house on Nevada Street, then moved to South San Francisco in 1955, where they raised four daughters and three sons. In addition to being a full-time mother and referee, Betty later worked as a bookkeeper. Joseph Vincent was a teacher at Aragon High School in San Mateo. Both were very active at St. Veronica’s Catholic Church in South San Francisco where Betty helped with bookkeeping, baked cookies for the priests and lent her beautifully trained soprano voice to the celebration of Mass each Sunday for many years.

Betty was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a friend to many. She will be remembered for her outgoing nature and commitment to the community and her church.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents Andrew and Catherine LaTomme (nee Ryan), her beloved husband Joseph Vincent, son Michael, sisters Mary (Schultz) and Catherine (Ahl), brother Andrew LaTomme Jr., and half-sister Ellen (Mosley). She is survived by her children Cecilia, Matthew (Gail Raabe), Paula (Jack Flower), Catherine (Philip Mast), Sean (Linda) and Damienne Smelt; grandchildren Scott and Kevin Leddy, Ryan Mast, Erin (Michael Madicen), Brennan Mast, Christopher Leddy (Jennie), Thomas Leddy (Melissa), Analise Leddy, and Elizabeth Bott; and great-grandchildren Melissa Bott, Callan Leddy, Charlotte Leddy, and Edward Leddy.

Family and friends are invited to view on Thursday, February 22, 2023 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Vigil service will begin at 6:30 pm. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 23 at 11:00 am at St. Mathias Catholic Church, 1685 Cordilleras Rd, Redwood City, CA 94062. Committal to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s name can be made to Saint Francis Center of Redwood City or the Catholic Worker Hospitality House in San Bruno.
