Obituary for Frank E. Ingersoll

We lost another member of the Greatest Generation and a WWII Navy Veteran. Frank was born in San Francisco and graduated from Balboa High School. He then joined the Navy and was a Signalman 3rd Class on the USS Bunkerhill. He came home and got his degree from San Francisco State and later in life went back to school and received his Master's Degree from Stanford.

In 1950, he married the love of his life June and they raised their five children in SSF. During that time, he was a teacher for the SF School District and at City College of SF where he served as the Health Science Department Chair. It was as the basketball coach at Woodrow Wilson High School during the '67-'68 season that highlighted his career. He coached an extremely talented and skilled group of young men to an undefeated basketball season (27-0) and they went on to win the Tournament of Champions. In large part due to this accomplishment, he was inducted into the Balboa Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. He was still in contact with most of these players until he passed.

Frank spent most summers of his youth at Russian River and later took his children there for family vacations where they learned to swim and water ski. The family later spent summers at their retreat in Lake Berryessa. He loved sports especially those played by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and played almost daily until he was 92. He also loved fishing and had many trips to the Delta with his sons. Frank loved the blues, zydeco and music in general. He could play any instrument. He was a man of many talents.

Later in life Frank ran into an old classmate, Adeline Taylor, at a class reunion. They spent many happy years enjoying each others company.
Some of our last conversations with Dad ended with him saying "We had fun didn't we!" We sure did Pop! We sure did!

He was loved like no other by his 5 kids, 5 grandkids and 5 great grandkids. He is survived by his sons Frank (Mary) Ingersoll, Randy (Mary) Ingersoll, daughter Lynn (Greg) Gonzalez and daughter-in-law Janet Ingersoll; Grandchildren Gina (Jim) Portolan, Bobby Ingersoll, Laura Gonzalez, Greg (Nicole) Gonzalez, and Hannah Ingersoll; and Great-Grandchildren Devin and Perilyn Ingersoll, Liv Portolan, Gio Batrez and Madison June Gonzalez. He was preceded in death by his wife June and sons Brad and Jeff Ingersoll.
