Obituary for Howard A. Powleson

Howard Aloysius Powleson passed away peacefully in Pleasanton, CA on February 19, 2024 at the age of 90. He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard Aloysius Powleson and Ann E. Powleson.

Howard is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Joanne (DeeDee). He was a devoted father to Kimberly (Valerie), Matt, Leanne (Rich) and beloved grandfather to Catherine, Meredith, and Ryan. Howard is also survived by numerous relatives and friends.

Born in San Francisco on November 20, 1933, Howard grew up on 39th Avenue and Geary Street. He attended St. Monica’s Grammar School, then Sacred Heart High School, and finally the University of San Francisco. He was drafted towards the end of the Korean War and found himself stationed in an Army hospital as a medic in Germany.

After his time in the service Howard started working as a Procurement Manager for a construction company. He would work for several such companies during his life. He married Joanne in August of 1964 and they would settle in South San Francisco. In 1966 they moved to Cottonwood Avenue where they would raise their children. He eventually would work for Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company, which also was in South San Francisco. In 1992 a job change would find Howard working for Dillingham Construction, which was located in Pleasanton. So, in 1993 Howard and Joanne moved across the Bay. After retiring from Dillingham, he would take on a new role as General Manager of Pleasanton Catholic Churches and Cemetery. A job he fully enjoyed up until he retired.

Howard was a long time member of San Francisco Olympic Club, where he enjoyed playing handball, basketball and, of course, golf. He was a member of Northern California Basketball Officials Association for 47 years, many of those years spent on the Executive Board. He truly loved officiating both football and basketball at many levels. He served on the Parish Council at All Souls Catholic Church and also as athletic director for many years. Howard coached youth basketball and other sports. He served as Eucharistic Minister at All Souls, as well as St Augustine and St Elizabeth. Additionally, he was a lector at All Souls Church for many years and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Pleasanton.

Howard loved his Bay Area sports teams, especially the San Francisco Forty Niners. He was a season ticket holder from Kezar to Candlestick and finally Levi’s. He loved to travel the world with Joanne and friends, and was an avid reader, especially of the iconic Chronicle “Green Sheet”

A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday March 5th , 11am at All Souls Church, 315 Walnut Ave, South San Francisco.
