Obituary for John F. McHenry
John Fisher McHenry, passed away on June 27th, 2021, at the age of 76 in Tracy, CA. Born and raised in San Francisco, CA. He attended Balboa High school and went on to receive his AA degree from, City College of San Francisco. In the Summer of 1966, John became a Police officer for the City of Daly City. John retired from the police department in March of 1987, at the age of 42. His early retirement allowed him to explore and meet many different people in various fields of work throughout the rest of his working years. He volunteered at hospice for one year and worked for Project 90 as a drug and alcohol counselor. Two jobs that forced him to look at his own mortality and newly found passion. As a recovering Alcoholic, he finally found his place in the world through helping those who dealt with the same demons as himself. At the age of 51 he returned to school, the College of San Mateo. This is where he received his Drug and Alcohol Counselor license. Prior to his official retirement, he worked at sunrise senior living in San Mateo. The perfect job for him. He drove senior citizens to and from their appointments. There was lots of down time, which allowed him to do what he loved best, listen to KGO radio Newstalk 810 or read.
John was a wonderful man. Known for being very reserved and a man of few words. When John did have something to say, you wanted to make sure to listen. He was a gentle giant who had a heart of gold. He enjoyed helping people and would move mountains to show he cared. He was a wealth of knowledge who loved reading books and exploring YouTube for funny videos. We will miss John dearly, but we will continue to look for the signs you keep sending us from heaven. You are in good company up there. Looking back at your life we realize how short, sweet and valuable time is here on earth. You will forever be etched in the hearts of all those you helped, loved and adored. We were truly blessed to be a part of your story.
John was married to the love of his life, Margaret McHenry. Father of two daughters, Meredith Taylor (Loren) and Justine Benitez (Antonio). Twin brother of James F. McHenry (Linda). Grandpa to Ryan, Ian and Presley. Uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation and funeral service will be held at Garden Chapel, 885 El Camino Real South San Francisco, CA. Friday, July 9th, 2021, 4:00pm Visitation and 5:00pm Prayers Service. Saturday, July 10th, 5:00pm Funeral Service. Reception to follow at the Elks Lodge, South San Francisco. 920 Stonegate Drive.
In Lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Wounded Warriors. Both organizations that were near and dear to John’s heart.
