Obituary for Pilar E. Alzugaray

It is with heavy hearts that we share of the passing of Pilar Alzugaray, loving wife, mother and grandmother. Pilar, known as Betty to most family and friends, passed away on Tuesday, February 27 at the age of 73. She was born in Guatemala City on October 12, 1950. She came to the United States in 1967 at the age of 17 dreaming of a better life. She graduated from El Camino High School in 1969. At the age of 21, Betty met Javier Alzugaray and they later married in 1979. They welcomed their daughter Yvette shortly after and settled in South San Francisco, California to raise their family. Betty enjoyed a long career working for the County of San Mateo, retiring after 25 years of service. She was one of the founding members of the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center in SSF where she spent many years contributing to the Center and its vibrant community. Betty was a devoted and doting grandmother, loved traveling and connecting with people and her favorite moments were those surrounded by family and friends. She built a life and a home filled with warmth and love and she will be deeply missed by those who knew her.

Betty is survived by her husband Javier, her daughter Yvette, her grandchildren Marko and Aleks Mindeguia, and her sisters Gladys Velazco and Silvia Hoffens along with nephews, nieces and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial mass held at 10:30am on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church in South San Francisco, followed immediately by graveside services at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.
