Obituary for Thomas George Kassimos

Thomas (Tom) George Kassimos, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away on April 6.

Tom was born in San Francisco to the late Beaula and Mike Kassimos on March 17, 1944 and was raised there with his sister Christine Kentros.

Although he had dreams of being a history teacher and loved to read, Tom had a long career as a truck driver for CF Airfreight, which was acquired by Emery Worldwide while he worked there. Tom retired in 2000.

In addition to history, Tom’s passions were taking meticulous hands-on care of his yard and gardens at his San Bruno home; barbecuing – even in the rain; his Kiwanis membership; volunteering with the Bags of Love & Hearts for Humanity ministries that serve the homeless; and the 49ers and Giants. He never missed watching a 49ers or Giants game and attended many in person with his good friend Steve Kelleher.

“My dad was an amazing, calm and beautiful soul,” said stepdaughter Deborah Orler. “Although he never had biological children, he selflessly stepped into the role of stepdad when he married my mom 36 years ago and also with my stepsister Becky in a previous marriage. He loved and lived for his family.”

Tom’s sense of humor came shining through with his nickname for his late canine companion, Thunder, who he referred to as “his blonde girlfriend.”

Tom is survived by his wife, Carol Kassimos; his sister Christine Kentos and her children Maria Kentos Aronis (Alex) and Tom Kentros ; his stepdaughter Becky (Marc) D’Amico and their Tommy (Joanne)and Vince (Jenna); and stepdaughter Deborah Orler and her son Anthony Shiffer, who is married to Nykki.

Visitation will take place from 11am -12:30pm at Garden Chapel, 885 El Camino Real, San Francisco followed by a funeral mass and reception at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 999 Brotherhood Way, San Francisco.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s honor may be sent to Hearts for Humanity, 555 O’Neill, Suite 14, Belmont CA 94002.
