Obituary for Wellington (Gus) Fung

Wellington (Gus) Fung November 9, 1922 - September 1, 2019 Wellington (Gus) Fung, age 96, passed away on September 1, 2019 after living a long and wonderful life. Until the beginning of this year, he lived independently in a two bedroom apartment cooking his own meals, and enjoying his pastime doing jigsaw puzzles and watching sports. Because of his health, he moved to a residential comfort home where he enjoyed the love and attention of his caretakers. Before his passing, he was able to say good bye to all his family. Gus was born in San Francisco on November 9, 1922 to Edward and Edna Fung. He was the eldest of six children. His brothers George, Richard, and Edward have passed; his sisters Ruby and Crystal reside in Richmond and Tucson. In San Francisco he went to Commodore Stockton Elementary and San Francisco Polytechnic High School. He entered World War II in the US Army Air Corps with the 7th Troop Carrier Squadron on March 6, 1943 and left the service on January 6, 1946 as a Staff Sergeant. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater and fought in the North Appennines, Po Valley, and in Air Combat Balkans. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He worked as an electronic technician for the Navy at both the Hunters Point and Long Beach Naval Shipyards. After retiring, he worked at Mervyns to achieve his forty quarters for social security benefits. He found out he really enjoyed it and continued working there after achieving his forty quarters. He married the love of his life, Katherine Chan on September 3, 1950, and they spent 67 wonderful years together until she passed away from cancer in 2017. Gus and Katie have been blessed with two wonderful children, Allan and Kathy, six grandchildren, three from Allan: Joey (wife Chloe) with great grandson Nolan, Katie (husband Mike) and Scotty (wife Mary) and three from Kathy: Chris (wife Ashley) with great grandsons Greyson and Brayden, Nicole, and Courtney (husband Alan). Gus and Katie loved to travel and enjoyed life. They traveled all over the world once they were retired. He was a great woodworker and craftsman, and built furniture and toys for his grandchildren. He always put family first and made sure everybody was happy. He is now once again with the love of his life, Katie, and of course with his parents and siblings. May he rest in peace. Friends and Family are invited to a Memorial Service on Friday, September 27, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Garden Chapel.
